All Island Dermatology Clinic Shadow
This past week, I had the opportunity to shadow a nurse practitioner who actually graduated Columbia's nursing program. Although I had to travel aaaaaaalllll the way to Long Island for this one day shadow day, I got to see a lot! It is also really neat knowing that nurse practitioners have the ability of working in specific areas of focus like dermatology. The clinic actually had a few nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and doctors who see patients all day long.
Here's a list of things I saw (probably missing things because it was a pretty busy day!) -->
Angiomas
Angiokeratoma
Basal cell carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma
Pore cleanups
Venous stasis
Psoriasis treatment with UV light
Actinic keratosis
Seborrheic keratosis
Cyst draining
Molluscum
Shingles!
TWO TIC removals on someone's torso
Scissoring/cutting off of skin tags
Lasering off armpit hair
Liquid nitrogen use on warts
Electrosurgery
Overall, a super neat day! The NP I followed saw patients of all ages that day. She was excellent at patient education and I got to learn a lot from her in the process. Derm is definitely an interesting field!
By the way -- did I tell you I was done with my weekly nursing home clinical rotations?! Well -- I am done! Almost done with clinical experiences for this semester. Looking forward to clinicals in the new year where I will mainly be working one on one with a NP.
I'll keep ya updated! I have family visiting and am very excited! :) Have a great weekend, everyone!
Sincerely,
Meagan
